I should note that the midwife practice I saw during pregnancy and birth is not at all what most people think of when they hear “midwife.” I went to a group practice and saw many different members, most of whom were wonderful, thoughtful, caring, and importantly, non-judgmental women. So I began non-stress tests twice a week for the duration. Fortunately, she was gentle and respectful in her exam, and it wasn’t uncomfortable at all. But every pregnancy is different so who knows.Īfter 40 weeks, my midwife tried to do a membrane sweep by to no avail- my cervix was firmly closed for business. I now attribute it to lack of exercise (I did yoga about once a week)- I have been much more active during this pregnancy ( Bodypump!) and have had virtually no pain- hence, my working theory. I had terrible back pain starting at about 14 weeks into my pregnancy and for the entire time. And on the plus side I never really had to do kick counts because he was pretty much always kicking. Though this sometimes kept sleep away, I never really minded- I loved knowing he was alive and well in there. His favorite thing to do was gymnastics right when I decided it was time for bed. Wylie was a very active little man in my belly.

But getting to know Wylie in and out of the womb has been one of the greatest things I’ve ever experienced, and worth all the bad stuff.

This was in part because we lost our first pregnancy, and also first-time mom jitters. Plus, since we will have another one come December, I should get it out while it’s still somewhat fresh.īefore launching into the birth, I must set the stage by saying I was VERY nervous throughout most of the pregnancy.
